How Long Does It Take To Do a Bathroom Renovation?

If you intend to renovate your main bathroom, one of your most pressing concerns will be "how long does it take to do a bathroom renovation?" Everyday life continues, especially if you have a busy family. So, get a timetable from a few construction companies. Prepare to take a deep breath! You could be without a functional bathroom for up to two months. Our experienced crews at Brisbane Bathroom Renos typically take 2 – 3 weeks, but this depends on the scope and size of the project. Here's a more detailed timeline for bathroom renovations.

It all adds up

Your next question is almost certainly why — it's not like that on TV makeover shows. You've probably seen the neat project charts that show all the stages of a renovation flowing smoothly from one another day after day. That's an excellent place to start, and it'll help you see the big picture. However, the reality may differ.

There are usually unexpected problems to deal with, for starters, such as late deliveries, fittings that don't fit, and specialists who aren't available on the days they are supposed to be on site. There's also a lot of work to do, with preparation, drying, and finishing time thrown in.

How many people

Another critical factor is the size of the site team. Are you hiring one person to do everything or a team of plumbers, electricians, plasterers, tilers, flooring fitters, and painters? One person could complete a simple project. They may focus on your bathroom throughout the project. However, they may be working on other jobs simultaneously, which causes lead times to slip.

If you have a larger team of specialist contractors, as we do at Brisbane Bathroom Renos, they may be able to complete the refurbishment in less time.

Be realistic

Whatever approach you take, it's best to be realistic and plan for more time. Then you might be in for a shock. Here's how a typical minor bathroom refurbishment should go to help you understand what will happen during those weeks.

Bathroom renovation timeline

The old has gone (2 days)

It all starts with a messy, dusty demolition of your contemporary bathroom – fittings removed and thrown away, tiles removed from the wall, flooring lifted, and a thorough clean-up. Hopefully, the demolition will not reveal any hidden structural damage caused by leaks or unpleasant surprises such as asbestos.

Making amends (2 days)

There may be a few repairs needed before the new work begins. Filling holes in the wall, repairing any loose or damaged floorboards, or removing any wiring or piping that is now in the wrong place could all be part of this stage.

The plumbing (2 days)

The plumber instals water and waste lines in the proper locations. This may take longer if baths, showers, basins, and toilets are relocated to use available space better.

Electrical fittings (2 days)

The electrician routes cables to the proper locations for lights, shaving points, and shower power. It may be necessary to cut and make promising new channels in the walls, connect and test new cabling to existing circuits, and update the safety switch. Any switches or other fixtures are added later. Before beginning any plastering, the electrical work should be inspected. If an inspector is unavailable for a few days, this could cause a delay.

Plastering (2-4 days plus drying time before painting)

Plasterers have to make suitable any damaged surfaces before they start work. In some cases, they may install a 'dry wall' to conceal any pipe work or other surface fittings. The first coat of plaster requires a day to dry before a final skim coat.

Painting (2 -3 days)

A painter can't begin until the plaster has dried out completely, which may add several days to the schedule. The first coat of paint on new plaster is a unique watery mix, followed by one or two coats of the final colour.

Tiling (2-3 days)

Tiling time depends on the number of tiles to be fitted. If you only have a splashback around the wash basin and tiling or a wall panel in the shower, tiling might only take a day. But larger areas with complicated joints or patterns could take two to three days.

Fitting and flooring (2-3 days)

The most enjoyable aspect of the job for everyone involved. The fittings – bath, shower, toilet, lights, blinds, cabinets, and accessories – can now be installed, connected, and tested by the plumber and electrician. Flooring can be installed once everything is in place. Vinyl flooring can be installed in hours, but wooden flooring with complicated trimming around fittings can take a day.

As you can see, that schedule takes up to 21 working days, with each stage proceeding immediately. However, it's easy to see how minor issues or delays in starting the next stage can easily extend the completion time to 6 weeks. However, a new bathroom is an excellent investment for your home, so the wait will most likely be worthwhile.
